An Interview with Shetal Shah
(Continued)
PM: What are you currently working on?
Shetal: I'm focusing on getting ready for the Knitting Factory
showing, I want to print out a few more Ngoso photos. And I've been
experimenting with being in front of the camera lately - a friend
of mine devises these great characters that he creates costumes
and jewelry for. And I'm learning about acting. And I'm still writing
and trying to read them out loud.
PM: How do you interpret the photos that you took in a line
or two?
Shetal: The attempt to capturing what is natural in people.
PM: Do you romanticize your own photos?
Shetal: Don't think so. Except in my interpretation of the
photos, I think the naturalness of the subject was a discovery moreso
than capturing something. So violent, that word, and that day was
more
spiritual, flowy, spontaneous, earthy. A mixture of these.
PM: Okay, not so serious now. if you stole something from
Target, what would it be?
Shetal: The bullseye.
Shetal: Target is a hardware store?
PM: Word association. Ready?
Shetal: Sure.
PM: Feminist.
Shetal: Soft.
PM: Indigo.
Shetal: Blazing red.
PM: Gelato.
Shetal: Surprising.
PM: Mischief.
Shetal: A grin
PM: Fearlessness
Shetal: Strong cliffs.
PM: Ok, enough of that. Fill this in: mama says
Shetal: Stay independent
PM: Poppa says
Shetal: Do what you love but find a way to make money from
it.
PM: You are: the angel, the muse, the pixie, the vixen,
or the gangsta bitch?
Shetal: I've been called a muse before so I guess that'd
be my choice.
